What is a gas pipe? You might typically think, “A gas pipe is just the pipe that carries natural gas when we’re cooking, right?” But the answer is definitely “No, no, no—it’s not as simple as we think!” Here’s a brief introduction for you:

First: Gas pipes must be able to withstand a certain level of pressure. Typically, PE resins with high molecular weights and excellent mechanical properties are chosen. PE resin has become the commonly used material for gas pipes because it features low melt viscosity, good flowability, and ease of processing, allowing for a relatively wide range in selecting its melt index. PE pipe materials for gas applications represent a replacement for traditional steel and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gas pipes. Therefore, when selecting materials for gas pipes, PE pipes can be given priority consideration. Now, let’s talk about their key characteristics.
PE gas pipe Features:
• Excellent hygienic performance: PE pipes are manufactured without the addition of heavy-metal salt stabilizers, making the material non-toxic, free from scale buildup, and incapable of harboring bacterial growth—thus effectively addressing secondary contamination of urban drinking water.
• Excellent corrosion resistance: With the exception of a few strong oxidizing agents, it is resistant to erosion by a wide variety of chemical media; it exhibits no electrochemical corrosion and boasts an exceptionally long service life. Under rated temperature and pressure conditions, PE pipes can be safely used for over 50 years.
• Better impact resistance: PE pipes have excellent toughness and high impact strength, so even if heavy objects are directly placed on the pipe, it won't lead to pipe rupture.
• Reliable connection performance: The strength of the hot-melt or electrofusion joints in PE pipes is higher than that of the pipe material itself, ensuring that the joints will not break apart due to soil movement or live loads.
• Excellent construction performance: The pipes are lightweight, the welding process is simple, construction is convenient, and the overall project cost is low.
• Pipe connections (electrofusion welding): Straight pipes and straight pipes, as well as straight pipes and pipe fittings, are joined using a dedicated electrofusion welding machine. This method is typically used for pipes with diameters of 160 mm or less. Hot-melt butt welding: Pipes are joined using a specialized butt-welding machine. This method is generally employed for pipes with diameters of 160 mm or more. Steel-plastic connections: Connections can be made using flanges, threaded couplings, and other similar methods.

Polyethylene (PE) pipe for gas use Current Status and Development Prospects of Dao Applications:
Today, with the sustained prosperity of China’s national economy, the development of China’s plastics industry has propelled our country into the ranks of the world’s largest consumers of plastics. Chemical building materials have become one of the four major categories of construction materials—alongside steel, cement, and wood—and their development has become an important component of the national economy. Moreover, the plastics products sector has emerged as the fastest-growing industry within the plastics field. Entering the 21st century, with the implementation of China’s “10th Five-Year Plan” and “11th Five-Year Plan,” driven by rapid macroeconomic growth, the plastics pipe industry has experienced even more rapid development. China’s output of plastic pipes surged from 1.2 million tons in 2001 to 8.4021 million tons in 2010, and in 2011, it exceeded 10 million tons, reaching a new historical high. Among plastic pipes, polyethylene (PE) pipes stand out; they are no longer mistakenly regarded as cheap substitutes for metal materials. Thanks to their unique and comprehensive performance characteristics, polyethylene (PE) pipes have long been widely adopted across various sectors in economically developed countries around the world. In particular, polyethylene (PE) pipes for gas distribution have become one of the most remarkable achievements in the pipeline industry. Since the Shanghai Gas Company began pilot testing polyethylene (PE) pipes for city gas pipelines in 1982, their widespread use has now spanned nearly three decades. Through years of experimentation, promotion, application, and research, the advantages of using polyethylene (PE) as a material for underground gas pipelines—namely, reliable quality, safe operation, easy maintenance, and cost-effectiveness—have been fully demonstrated. As a result, polyethylene (PE) pipes have replaced traditional metal pipes in medium- and low-pressure gas networks, becoming the preferred pipe material specified in the national standard GB 50028-2006, "Code for Design of Urban Gas Supply Systems." Whether or not polyethylene (PE) pipes are used in urban gas network construction has also become one of the key indicators for measuring a city’s economic development and the technological sophistication of its gas industry. Taking economically advanced countries such as the United States and Denmark as examples, the penetration rate of polyethylene (PE) gas pipelines has already exceeded 90%, demonstrating their extensive and widespread adoption. Plastic pipes are now extensively utilized in architectural engineering, municipal engineering, and industrial construction.
