What is the market outlook for plastic pipes?

Prospects for the Plastics Pipe Industry

What’s the outlook for the plastic pipe industry?

According to the “2016-2021 China Plastic Pipe Industry Market Demand Forecast and Investment Strategy Planning Analysis Report” released by the Qianzhan Industry Research Institute, China’s current urbanization rate stands at only around 40%, whereas the average in developed countries exceeds 70%. As a fundamental building material, pipes are essential components—often referred to as the “three connections”—required for any construction project. They serve as the indispensable “blood vessels” of urban development. It is foreseeable that the massive-scale urbanization process will continue to generate tremendous demand for the pipe industry over the next decade at least. Additionally, the nation’s total water supply has remained stable at around 50 billion cubic meters; in 2011, it reached 51.342 billion cubic meters, of which 15.965 billion cubic meters were used for industrial production, accounting for 31.09% of the total supply, and 24.765 billion cubic meters were allocated to domestic use, representing 48.24% of the total supply. By 2011, the length of urban water supply pipelines in China had already reached 570,000 kilometers—1.5 times the length at the end of the Tenth Five-Year Plan period.

Compared with advanced countries, China’s application of plastic pipes still has many untapped areas—precisely these represent new market opportunities, such as the research and development of plastic flexible hoses. Currently, most domestic plastic pipe manufacturers focus their production on rigid plastic pipes, while relatively few companies are involved in the production of flexible plastic hoses. As a result, the market for flexible hoses remains largely untapped, especially high-tech flexible hoses, which face fewer competitors and offer higher profit margins. Compared to the domestic PVC pipe market, Chinese plastic pipe products enjoy a price advantage in the international market, attracting increasing attention and generating relatively high profits. According to a research report by the Qianzhan Industry Research Institute, the global plastic pipe market reached a value of 80 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. In 2011, plastic pipes made from PVC accounted for more than 55% of total production, followed by PE—particularly HDPE—which made up 28% of the remaining 45%. Experts predict that although traditional materials will continue to be popular among consumers, materials such as ABS, PB, and PA will play an increasingly significant role in future pipe manufacturing.
