Because the temperature variation is relatively small, the thermal expansion and contraction of pipes caused by these temperature fluctuations result in only minor pressure changes within the system. HDPE exhibits strong resistance to damage from fatigue, wear, weathering, and corrosion. It can withstand pressure fluctuations induced by temperature changes as well as impacts during on-site handling.
2. From an installation perspective:
When using HDPE pipes, mechanical fittings are generally not required. The hot-melt technique is used to connect pipes and fittings, ensuring virtually leak-free performance and high reliability. Even if a leak does occur, it’s easy to repair. Additionally, HDPE pipes are lightweight and highly flexible, making them easy and quick to install on-site.
4. From the perspective of service life:
The service life of HDPE pipes is longer than that of mechanical components within buildings—and can even match the lifespan of the building itself. With current materials, HDPE pipes can last up to 50 years.
5. From the perspective of later maintenance:
In addition to its long service life, the use of hot-melt fittings virtually eliminates the need for maintenance on the pipes themselves. Once installed, the underground piping system becomes a permanent fixture of the project. Polyethylene is also highly resistant to corrosion by most chemicals and does not harbor microorganisms, helping to reduce water quality issues. From a maintenance standpoint, it’s far more convenient than copper, iron, or galvanized steel pipes.
Therefore, considering all of the above, HDPE is the most practical choice for the underground pipe loop in ground-source heat pump systems!
