According to the grade of PE raw materials, they are generally classified into the following levels: PE32, PE40, PE63, PE80, and PE100. Among these, the raw materials used for manufacturing PE pipes are grades 80 and 100. The main difference between pipes made from these two grades lies in their pressure ratings at the same wall thickness—specifically, a pipe made from grade 100 material can withstand a higher pressure rating than one made from grade 80 material under the same wall thickness.
If the pipe is designed for a service life of 50 years and is used to convey water at 20°C, the safety factor C can be taken as Cmin = 1.25. The allowable design stresses for different material grades can be determined using the formula σs = [MRS]/C. For PE80 material, the maximum allowable design stress is 6.3 MPa; for PE100 material, the maximum allowable design stress is 8.0 MPa. The relationship among the nominal pressure (PN) of the pipe, the design stress σs, and the standard dimension ratio (SDR) is given by: PN = 2σs/(SDR - 1). The relationship between the standard dimension ratio (SDR) and the nominal outer diameter (dn) and nominal wall thickness (en) is: SDR = dn/en, that is, the standard dimension ratio equals the nominal outer diameter divided by the nominal wall thickness.
Jiuhe Rubber & Plastic The polyethylene raw materials used for PE pipes are grades 80 and 100. Additionally, PE water pipes of grade 80 can be classified according to their nominal pressure as follows: 0.4 MPa, 0.6 MPa, 0.8 MPa, 1.0 MPa, and 1.25 MPa. PE water pipes of grade 100 can be classified according to their nominal pressure as follows: 0.6 MPa, 0.8 MPa, 1.0 MPa, 1.25 MPa, and 1.6 MPa. Currently, grade 100 raw materials account for the majority of the market.
